Spring and Summer 2013

Our spring and summer of 2013:  Here's March and April.

Remodeling the South Wing

Dave has been working a ton to make us a master bedroom and bathroom in the back part of the house that he calls "The South Wing."   There were a lot of days where I'd go to work and come back that evening to find things quite different.  Very exciting!  I didn't get pictures of everything, but here are some....

This is my first foray into The World of Blogging™, so hopefully the layout is OK.

You can click a picture to enlarge it and see a row of all the pics at the bottom of the screen.   Click the "X" on the right when you're done. (And enlarging the pictures gives you the full effect of how gnarly the old stuff was!)

These first 8 pictures are from mid-March.  Dave (L) and his brother Ed (R) are starting to rip into what used to be the laundry room (just behind the little window) and the "second bathroom" behind it (visible after the wall and some stucco were torn down)....

Dale Miller, an extraordinary guitarist and arranger, set this blog up for me; I wouldn't have attempted blogging otherwise.

During a visit last summer with Dale and his wife Terry (a great lady), even though he was feeling pretty crummy, he said I should try blogging, went on his computer, had me log into my Gmail, and set up the start of this blog.

Dale fought valiantly against lymphoma for several months before passing away on August 19, 2013.  He was very open and upbeat about his situation.  He kept a lymphoma blog, which -- until August 7 -- he updated when he could.  Dale was a fabulous fingerstyle guitarist and a wonderful person.  He has been, and always will be, a huge influence and music hero for so many of us.  You can go to www.dalemiller.com if you'd like to read more about him and listen to him perform some of his beautiful music arrangements.

He will be missed.

Pics 3 thru 5:  Taking out some of the old ceiling over the funky "second bathroom."

Pic 6:  The old throne, dethroned.  I found it somehow picturesque.

                                  Pics 7 and 8:  A closer look at the gutted "second bathroom";
what isn't visible is the old, damp, nasty stuff that Dave and Ed pulled out.

Some pics from April.  Pics 9 thru 17 are from April 18:

Pics 9 and 10 were taken from what used to be a separate rental unit.  You can see one of the two doors to the unit (aka "the blue room"), and the view is through what used to be the wall behind the closet, and into what used to be the laundry room.

Dave took part of the floor off of the "second bathroom"
to reveal some of the wacky old piping underneath.
#11

The bulging pinkish wall here is the other side of the shower stall of the bathroom off the "blue room."

Plastic sheeting to keep critters out (weighted on the outside).
Our living room (right side) and guest room (left side) are on the
                     other side of the wall.

The plywood is part of the critter-shield.

Dave's brother Ed demonstrating the scale of the blown-in
insulation that came down along with the ceiling over the
                                          blue room.

That's Dave in Pic 21, just starting to demo the back wall of the blue room.

And then dismantling the bathroom off the blue room.

Pics 23 thru 25:  The toilet was still working at that time; OK as long as you
like that open-air feeling!  Dave is taking down the other shower
                                stall.
